It’s always the same weird feeling.

First it was amusement.
Then he got angry, very angry and destroyed everything that used to belong to him.
And then… he got sad.

It felt like a cold… a very long and painful cold.
And for five years he waited.

It was the same old sad joke.
Like the bride who didn’t grant herself to cry, not even when everyone had left from the wedding.

And so what? Why should he care about other’s gossip? None of them mattered.

Do you see a future for digital photography? Quite a radical question in the feeding frenzy of digital camera marketing. To me digital photography is the best thing that has ever happened to photography. But, what is its future? A difficult question to answer and possibly a loaded one.

Film photography was always known as just ‘photography’, never film photography. It was the standard. With the emergence of digital photography this standard has been challenged. My question is, “will digital photography become the standard or will it remain the ugly sister of photography”? 

I think that it will always remain the ‘poor cousin’ of film photography unless two things happen:

1. All digital cameras need to develop to the point that they are equivalent in quality to that of the most basic film camera. They must eradicate the digital vs film debate. There must be no difference between the two formats. The most expensive digital cameras are getting close to that standard but the point and shoot models cannot compete with their film counterparts. I think that with the pace of development, despite an economic crisis,  consumers are demanding that lower end cameras need to improve in quality. Although, true photography is all about the SLR and I think we are on the road to the quality needed to compete with film cameras.

2. There is a mindset change that quantity is better than quality. Thought that went into taking a photograph with film has all but disappeared. The speed with which digital images are taken degrades the results of good photography. This is evidenced by the quality of images submitted to competitions, placed on forums and displayed on blogs. If this mindset changes and we start putting more thought into photography it does bode well for digital as an art form.

How do we change this so that digital is synonymous with photography? I personally think that the key is education and learning. In the same way that digital photography has changed the face of photography digital has changed the face of publishing. 

Great learning material is available in electronic form as free education or reasonably priced education. It is now cheap and easy to learn about photography and the techniques of improvement. It doesn’t take an expensive course or diploma to radically improve your images. It’s as simple as buying an ebook or an electronic course. Many have money back guarantees so the risk is minimal. Easy to find and easy to learn. The key is to learn photography and not just digital photography.

When film photography was born it was perceived as an art and much care was exercised in the execution. It was birthed in and developed with this mindset and, linked to the costs involved, remained mostly as an art form. Even the masses exercised care in its practise. 

But, with digital photography it is very different. What it has done is make the art form cheaper, simpler and faster. Whenever you add these three factors to anything in life, it opens the door to loss off technique, lower quality and diminished value. This is seen by the billions of electronic images that remain on DVDs, hard drives and memory cards, unappreciated and valueless. 

It’s in this world that the art of photography has to find its place and raise its head again from the chaos of digital. Digital is the best thing since sliced bread.  The only question that now needs to be answered is will it rise to the occasion and become the new art form or will it be the vehicle that is responsible for the loss of a great art form?

Zivity.com: a Zivity-Style Sex Photos Idea

According to ABC news, Zivity.com is a new pay-for-nudity web-site, for those 18 and over, that is currently being tested to invited members only by its San Francisco area staff. How the site works is that members will pay $10 a month to surf the masses or to promote their own nudity page.

As members surf, they will be allowed to vote 5 times a month on models and photography skills; each vote is worth .80 that is split equally between model and photographer. Since Zivity offers this pay for nude photography, current tax information will be needed from members with this, discouraging the potential underage users.

In my opinion, I am not sure that a site like this can survive over years to become one of our on the internet community household names. Today, when you click into Zivity you will see a very professional looking pic of a blonde girl with too much eye make-up, who is spotlighted with a photographer light over a darkened background.

Perhaps many photographers viewing this promotional pic are thinking that they can do superior than that, so they are joining the 30,000-person waiting index to become members. Yet, there is a reality factor every time you invite professional photographers to compete with amateurs; professionals know what they are doing, and people will vote accordingly.

As people sign-up for Zivity and pay their $10 a month, they will be doing so in hopes of making cash through votes. This means that all body’s and camera gear must remain pristine over time, for members to last longer than one season. At $10 a month, a model and photographer must make $20 in eighty-cent votes to cover their fees monthly.

While it is true that some members will be there as viewers only, this site might be prone to a constant flow of $10 membership cancellations and sign-ups. With any web-site you must invent a solid-core user base that will be with you for as long as the site is alive. Mass nudity that charges users is not conducive to a solid core user-base.

Once you mix a request for membership fees along with the idea of mass nudity, you are subconsciously requesting the American public to pornography; a thought that many people equate to illegal activity. On the other hand, when a site is free to use, these same people may attempt to use it out of curiosity or personal reasons.

Zivity does not seem to be thinking of their potential for an unstable user-base, and potential bad image that can happen when cash bonds with nudity; they appear to be thinking of people on free -to-use MySpace who slide a few nude photos by the system, or adults already associated with on the web adult entertainment elsewhere.

I wish Zivity well, just as I wish all new web-sites well despite content. Opening a new business is an exciting time for those working behind the scenes. My personal vote though, is that this site is doomed to be a young death before it starts.

There are already many pay for porn sites online, and while Zivity is trying to offer a new twist to this age-old game, I just do not believe that their twist hold enough pizzazz to capture a long time paid membership audience. Amateur photographers can not compete with pros for money, and the paying public is fickle; people demand choice on where to spend their entertainment dollars.
